This afternoon, the kids and I read it a few times. Then, they sat together and "read" it. Preston said, "Once upon time people make cookies," which is not (in any form whatsoever) how the book reads! Too funny, though! Gracie's favorite page is (quite fittingly for my love bug) about "Expansive Love" and features a little girl dressed in a leotard and tutu with her arms outstretched. (She loves the little girl!)
It is the sweetest (pun intended) book ever and it makes us so very happy. Thank you H+V+v!!! It is just what the Flock needed to brighten our days! You epitomize thoughtfulness.

On Friday, Gracie saw her orthopedist for a routine follow-up. He kindly signed the prescription for her new wheelchair (fitted and measured the day before) with no questions asked, so that ball is finally rolling in the right direction.
As I do with most appointments, I had a list of hot points to discuss...
- Scoliosis - - has her curve progressed?
- Pelvic rotation - - is there an underlying problem somewhere other than her scoliosis causing this rotation?
- Right knee and ankle turn in when walking - - does she need any sort of bracing?
- Lack of weight bearing on right - - again... bracing? Is there an underlying issue?
There is good news and not-good news...
- Curve appears stable at this point. Good. (Still spine surgery in her future...) No need to brace her spine during the day. Good. (She previously had a brace, but wouldn't move a muscle while wearing it. Her whole team agreed that mobility was the most important thing so long as her curve didn't rapidly deteriorate. For those who don't know, a brace won't correct a curve, rather it helps slow the progression of the curve.)
- Pelvic rotation stems from the scoliosis... no other underlying cause. Good.
- Right knee and ankle don't consistently turn in with all of her steps so she doesn't need orthotics. Doc watched Gracie walk from the front and back without pants, shoes or socks (holding my fingers for balance support... first time she's walked any distance in a doctor's appointment! It was way too stressful in the past!). All good.
- He says her (teeny tiny) feet (size six... baby shoes!) are "beautiful, flexible and need no special attention!" (Eh hem... other than her beloved pedicures from Mommy!) Good.
- Lack of weight bearing likely stems from the rotation caused by the scoliosis. The curve and subsequent pelvic rotation have caused a leg length discrepancy (which we've known for years) and she always has her right knee bent. Clearly, muscle strength and development have been affected. There's not really anything to do about this other than hope, with time, she begins weight bearing more. Unfortunately, until her spine is straight, she likely will have that right knee bent. And, the longer it's bent, the less likely the muscles and knee joint in that leg will function normally. Ugh... wait and see.
- Because of the scoliosis that's caused the pelvic rotation, he is extremely concerned about her hips. After reviewing the additional hip film he ordered, he was pleased that her hips look "okay" given her rotation. However, there is spacing above the joints and his opinion is that if we don't do some preventative body bracing (yes... body... not just back), her hips will eventually come out of socket (painful) and she'll need surgery (very painful). NOT good.
He said he'd like her to wear the brace at night while she sleeps. Um... while she what? I explained her "sleep" pattern and also explained that she doesn't (won't) wear clothes at home, including pajamas. He said the brace won't hurt her skin if she's just in a diaper... so that's "good." I realize that it's a really bad thing, especially for her hips, that my sweet daughter likes to sleep (when she does it!) on her side curled in a ball. I understand that this is something we have to try, regardless of how much she hates it (and regardless of how much we hate making her try).
If we don't make an honest effort to put her in this brace and something does happen with her hips, we won't be able to live with ourselves. If we try (and try and try) and we aren't able to get her to comply, then at least we know we tried. But I'd be a liar if I said I am not dreading this with every fiber of my being. If she hated her old brace that covered "only" her torso, can you even imagine how she's going to react to one that goes from just under her armpits all the way down her legs... one that will force her to lay on her back? (Never mind my concern for my trached child not being able to be on her side at night to cough easily. I guess my lack of sleep (and hers... duh) is about to hit serious overdrive.) As if you can't tell, my "Pollyanna" personality is out the door on this one... say hello to "Realistic Rhonda" - - she knows this won't be pretty.
So, once we get through the heart cath this week, we will be getting Gracie fitted for a full body brace. Stay tuned.
*Crystal... can you please refresh my memory as to what led up to Eva's hip surgery? Thanks!

That's a lot to take in Kristi! I can only imagine how uncomfortable it would be to wear that brace. I hear what you are saying though. How can you NOT try and prevent something like the hip problem. I hope she tolerates it better than you imagine! Curious, is your ortho Weinert? We see him on Wednesday. :)
The pictures of the two of them reading together are just plain LOVE!
Wow a lot of info in this appointment, I am glad for the most part things are going well. The book is ADORABLE and I chuckle everytime I see Gracie without clothes on knowing she is a little stripper and hates them so...LOL!
As for Eva's hip surgery 2 years ago we noticed her knee would turn in as well when she tried to walk and she was very tight. I took her in for her 1st ortho appointment that doctor was HORRIBLE he did not do xrays or anything I was very upset because he brushed us off. So much for trying to find someone closer to home.
Then we went to Childrens and the 1st thing they did was xrays of her hips. They noticed a slight dislocation of her hips, the tightness was pulling her hips out of place but nothing to get worried about at the time. We had gone 2 or 3 more times after that with xrays everytime. Last year in July we went and they noticed it was time to do something before we would have to do MAJOR surgery with pins and rods. So we went in, in Aug and they just cut into her muscle and stretched out her legs to lossen her up. After the casts came off in a month they said her hips looked really good, even my mom thought so just looking at the before and after xrays.
So her major issue was muscle tightness which was pulling on her hips and making it hard and painful to walk. Of course I am so greatful we went through with the surgery, look at her now, she is about to run away...LOL!
We are also watching Eva's spine, no real issue yet but we go every year to check it.
I know what you mean about the brace they slip in, Eva had one for her hips after the casts came off and we all hated it.
good luck with everything!!
These photos of G+P are sooooo sweet. I love Preston's version of the story - with a sentence like that, we can't go wrong! And I will always this of Gracie on the expansive love page now...so perfectly fitting.
As for Gracie's ortho appointment - that's a lot to take in. I can only imagine the weight and dread that hearing the words "full body brace" brings on your heart. Oh, my sweet Gracie-girl...and oh, my sweet Kristi-friend...Lots of love.
Your appt. was jam packed with info and sounds like a lot of good news w/ just a hint of bad. I understand the sleeping on the side curled up in a ball since that is the same way Christopher likes to sleep and I dont know how he would handle that. I am hoping that you are able to do the full brace and that you and her get rest while trying it out. I am right there w/ Crystal when it comes to Gracie being nakey.... and the chuckling... I chuckle as well because that is exactly how Christopher likes to be as well!
Kim
I'm hoping and praying Gracie will surprise you with the brace and not mind it too much (sometimes the things we think Ben will hate he doesn't). I know what you must be feeling though. The decisions we have to make and the things we have to put our CHARGErs though is so hard. I struggle with a lot of that myself. But, I would like to talk to you more about the wheelchair. We need to get one for Ben and wanted to know what kind you got since they have a lot of the same needs. We don't see a PT (long story) so I have a feeling I will have to go in with an idea of what I want. Will you email me at amy.russo@gmail.com?
One other thing I forgot to post yesterday, Gracie and Eva have the same shoe size, I love her tiny little feet...LOL! They also have the same messy hair days...LOVE IT!!
Hugs,
Crystal and Eva
Kristi,
I couldnt agree with you more - Hannah IS the most thoughtful person I've ever met in my life. The most giving, kind-hearted, thoughtful friend. We are blessed to have her in our lives.
Also, I love the fact that Gracie likes to sleep "nakey." Moriah was the same until everyone was horrified that I didn't put clothes on her =) I still let her go nakey from time to time though... it's what the girl likes!
Lots of love,
Victoria
